Historical Overview

The formation of Zhangye Colorful Danxia began during the Cretaceous period, approximately 145–66 million years ago, when the area was a vast basin of lakes and rivers. Over millennia, sediment layers of sandstone, siltstone, and mudstone accumulated, rich in iron, calcium, and other minerals. Tectonic uplift and erosion by wind, rain, and frost gradually carved these layers into dramatic peaks, ravines, and towers. While the geological processes span eons, the landform’s recognition as a tourist destination is recent, gaining global acclaim in the 21st century.
