The Name of the Wild Goose Pagoda—The Legend of Jianfu Temple and the Small Wild Goose Pagoda
The name "Small Wild Goose Pagoda" originates from a Buddhist connection during the Tang Dynasty. During the Jinglong era of Emperor Zhongzong of Tang (707-710 AD), a multi-eaved brick pagoda was built within the royal Jianfu Temple to house Buddhist scriptures brought back from India by the eminent Tang Dynasty monk Yijing. Originally named "Jianfu Temple Pagoda." Because its shape is similar to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda but slightly smaller, it was later called the "Small Wild Goose Pagoda." Legend has it that when Xuanzang returned from his pilgrimage to India, he brought the name "Wild Goose Pagoda" back to China, thus the pagoda in Ci'en Temple was named the "Big Wild Goose Pagoda," and the pagoda in Jianfu Temple became known as the "Small Wild Goose Pagoda." During several earthquakes in the Ming Dynasty, the fourteenth and fifteenth levels of the pagoda were destroyed, but the pagoda itself miraculously recovered from its cracks, a phenomenon known as the "Divine Reunion of the Wild Goose Pagoda." This slender Tang Dynasty pagoda, together with the ancient bell of Jianfu Temple, is known as the "Morning Bell of the Wild Goose Pagoda," one of the famous "Eight Scenic Spots of Guanzhong," and was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2014.

The Road to Rebirth – From an Ancient Temple to a Modern Museum
The modern story of the Xi'an Museum is a model of cultural heritage protection and revitalization:

A Millennium of Accumulation: The Small Wild Goose Pagoda, having withstood a thousand years of wind and rain, retains its original appearance from its early Tang Dynasty construction, despite the damage to its top and spire. The 13-story pagoda, standing 43.3 meters tall, was designated a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the State Council in 1961.

Masterful Construction (2004-2007): Designed by Zhang Jinqiu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a renowned architect, the main building of the museum was constructed based on the concept of "round heaven and square earth," and was named one of Xi'an's ten future landmark buildings.

Official Opening (May 18, 2007): The Xi'an Museum officially opened to the public, ending Xi'an's lack of a comprehensive urban history museum. On March 31, 2010, the museum officially opened to the public free of charge.

Cultural Heritage Passed Down to the Present: The museum houses nearly 130,000 cultural relics, including over 10,000 national-level treasures (grade III and above). The collection spans from prehistoric times to the Ming and Qing dynasties, systematically reflecting the politics, economy, culture, social life, and foreign exchanges of the ancient capital of Chang'an.

Must-See Wonders: A Symphony of History and Culture

Humanistic Ingenuity—A Dialogue Across Time and Space Between a Museum, a Pagoda, and a Garden
The cultural landscape of the Xi'an Museum is an eternal dialogue between ancient pagodas, cultural relics, and gardens.

Treasures of the Museum—The Brilliant Memories of the Thirteen Dynasties
The Xi'an Museum's collection is far more diverse and of higher quality than that of typical municipal museums. The following are must-see treasures:

Tricolor Glazed Pottery Horse-Dancing Figurine (Tang Dynasty): The Xi'an Museum's treasure, unearthed in 1966 from a Tang Dynasty tomb in Lianhu District, Xi'an. The most unique feature of this Tang tri-color glazed pottery figurine is its depiction of a galloping horse with all four hooves off the ground, making it the only extant example of this type in China. The horse is carried by a young man from the Western Regions, with his hair styled in double buns and wearing a round-necked blue robe made from imported cobalt material. The blue glaze confirms the saying, "Tri-color glaze with blue glaze is exceptionally valuable." The entire piece boasts a rich glaze and elegant form, seemingly poised to gallop into the prosperous Tang Dynasty capital of Chang'an. This artifact is located in the central exhibition area of the permanent display on the first basement floor of the museum.

Gilded Phoenix Bronze Bell (Western Han Dynasty): 78 cm high and weighing 20.13 kg, this is the largest extant Western Han Dynasty bronze bell in China. It is entirely gilded, with a vermilion bird on the lid, its head held high, tail curled, and holding a copper bead in its beak—a striking and graceful form. Most remarkably, when unearthed, the bell still contained 26 kg of Western Han Dynasty wine. Thanks to its unique interlocking design and lacquer seal, the wine remained fragrant for over two thousand years. This artifact is not only a pinnacle of ancient bronze craftsmanship but also allows us to travel through time and glimpse the refined lifestyle of the Western Han Dynasty nobility.

Yong Yu (Western Zhou Dynasty): A large bronze food vessel with a 123-character inscription on the bottom inside, recording the story of Duke Yi enfeoffing Shi Yong with land at the behest of the emperor. It is the earliest known record of a land transaction inscription.

Gilded Walking Dragon (Tang Dynasty): 18 cm long, 10.8 cm high, weighing approximately 260 grams. Gilded throughout, depicting a walking dragon, its majestic and graceful posture reflects the high degree of integration between Tang Dynasty metallurgy and Taoist culture.

Qin Dynasty High-Footed Jade Cup (Qin Dynasty): Unearthed in 1976 from the Qin Afang Palace site, made of green jade, it has turned a yellowish-brown after being stained. The cup has a straight, cylindrical body, decorated with persimmon calyx patterns and interlocking cloud patterns. Exquisitely carved and dignified, it is a masterpiece of Qin Dynasty jade ware.

Painted Female Standing Figurine (Tang Dynasty): A masterpiece among Tang Dynasty female figurines, its full face and graceful figure perfectly capturing the dignified elegance of a noblewoman of the Tang Dynasty.

Blue-Glazed Speckled Mule (Tang Dynasty): With its rich glaze and realistic form, it vividly recreates the image of a pack animal carried by merchants on the Silk Road.

Special Reminder: The most exquisite part of the Xi'an Museum is concentrated in the basic exhibition hall on the lower level, where most of the museum's treasures are located. It is recommended to allow at least 1.5 hours for a thorough visit.

The Soul of Ancient Pagodas—The Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Jianfu Temple
The Small Wild Goose Pagoda of the Tang Dynasty: A model of early square, multi-eaved brick pagodas in China. Originally 15 stories, 13 stories remain, standing 43.3 meters tall. The pagoda is beautifully shaped, with exquisite Tang Dynasty line engravings on the lintels, depicting flying apsaras, cloud patterns, floral patterns, and Western musical instruments such as the chicken drum, fully reflecting the fusion of Eastern and Western art. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views (tower climb ¥30) and overlook the southern part of Xi'an.

Jianfu Temple Ancient Architectural Complex: Originally a royal temple in the early Tang Dynasty, Jianfu Temple was destroyed in the wars at the end of the Tang Dynasty. The existing temple was rebuilt during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The mountain gate, bell and drum towers, Cishi Pavilion, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Repository, and Baiyi Pavilion are arranged along the central axis in a well-organized manner.

Wild Goose Pagoda Morning Bell: One of the Eight Scenic Spots of Guanzhong, the morning bell was rung by monks, its melodious sound resounding throughout Chang'an. Now, in the bell tower of Jianfu Temple, visitors can ring a replica of the ancient bell and experience the "healing" sound that transcends a thousand years.

Garden Realm—A Millennium-Old Sanctuary in the City
Extending east and west along the central axis of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Jianfu Temple, a large area of landscaping has been created, an artificial lake has been built, and infrastructure has been upgraded, forming a new urban garden landscape with shady trees and fragrant flowers. Ancient locust trees reach for the sky, stone benches and tables abound. When you're tired from walking, simply find a shady spot to sit and watch locals practice Tai Chi or do their morning exercises – that's the most authentic "Twelve Hours of Chang'an." Here, there are no crowded tour groups, only a Tang Dynasty pagoda that has withstood 1300 years of wind and rain. When autumn leaves fall on the bluestone slabs, Chang'an truly slows down.

Photography Tips:
The best panoramic view is from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor of the museum. Photographing the Small Wild Goose Pagoda through the windows creates a stunning contrast of ancient and modern, with excellent light and shadow. Beside the stone lions at the foot of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, with ancient trees and the pagoda as a backdrop, exudes a Zen-like atmosphere. Photographing the pagoda through the archway of the White Robe Pavilion creates a rich sense of depth. The Small Wild Goose Pagoda is at its best after 3 pm; using a wide-angle lens allows you to capture a breathtaking panorama of the architecture against the sky.
