Jinji Lake Scenic Area

Jinji Lake, the heart of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), is China’s largest urban lake park and a UNESCO-recognized "City of Design" landmark. Spanning 11.5 square kilometers, this man-made wonder blends avant-garde architecture, wetland ecology, and cultural innovation. Opened in 2007, it hosts the iconic Suzhou Center (China’s tallest "Gateway to the Future" skyscraper), the Moonlight Wharf cultural strip, and the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre (designed by Paul Andreu). With 24 million annual visitors, it epitomizes modern Chinese urbanism where skyscrapers kiss the sky and lakeshores hum with art, tech, and tranquility.

Historical Overview

Jinji Lake’s story begins in the 1990s when SIP’s founders reclaimed 7.4 square kilometers of marshland to create a "new Silicon Valley of the East." In 2004, French architect Paul Andreu designed the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre (nicknamed "The Pearl"), while British firm Atkins crafted the Suzhou Center mall. The 2012 Moonlight Wharf revitalization transformed docklands into a vibrant arts hub. In 2014, UNESCO named SIP a "Creative City of Design," and in 2021, Jinji Lake became China’s first "National Nighttime Economy Pilot Zone." Today, it hosts 300+ tech firms, 15 art galleries, and Asia’s largest IMAX dome theater.
